In Dallas, like old times, it’s all Perot Perot Perot. And that’s a good thing.

As a Perot biographer I want to bring you up to date on all things Perot in Dallas.

Most of the news listed below happened after my Perot play debuted and my popular companion book – Searching for Perot: My Journey to Discover Texas’ Top Family -- was published. Now in second printing, this is a little catchup for all of us.

I write “The Watchdog” column in The Dallas Morning News. I also write books and plays. This project’s website is www.PerotBook.com.

OK, now for the Perot news. Let’s start off with the helicopter ride.

Ross Jr. landed a helicopter in front of Dallas City Hall  and donated the chopper to the Dallas Police Dept. The gift marked the 40th anniversary of Junior’s world record setting helicopter ride around the world with co-pilot Jay Coburn, who was there. This is reminiscent of how Junior’s dad supported law enforcement.

North Texas Food Bank received a $10.5 million gift from the Perot family, one of the largest contributions in the food bank’s history. The food bank’s Plano campus is called “Perot Family Campus.”

FBI partnership: Ross Jr. announced that he is partnering with the Dallas FBI office to battle cybersecurity. Another reminder of his dad’s work assisting law enforcement.

Cricket. Ross Jr. and Anurag Jain announce they are investing in a new U.S. cricket league.

New Airport name. Have you heard the news about Alliance Airport’s new name? Yes, it’s now Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport.

Popular Klyde Warren Park received a $5 million gift from Margot Perot and family for the new Sheila and Jody Grant Children’s Park, The playground opened in November. The Grants are credited with creating and pushing Klyde Warrant Park to be built atop a freeway. Klyde Warren is recognized as something special.

The Grants didn’t want their name on the park, but like the way Ross Sr. forced Mort Meyerson’s name to go up on a symphony hall, Margot insisted on the Grant’s name for the playground.

“Ross would have loved this,” Margot to Dallas Morning News business columnist Cheryl Hall. “We always kind of think of him when we give these gifts.”

UTSW: In November the Ross and Sarah Perot Foundation gave $50 million to establish a permanent endowment at UT Southwestern Medical Center for a medical science training program. The program will give graduates a dual M.D. and a Ph. D.

United Way: The Perot Foundation donated $15 million to United Way of Dallas. It was noted as the largest gift in the charity’s history.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science celebrated its 10th birthday with a big community party.

Concerts: In another nod to his dad, Junior hosted two sets of outdoor concerts at the Circle T Ranch in Westlake, featuring the Dallas Symphony. His dad hosted concerts on his company’s campuses, too. If you worked at EDS or Perot Systems, you may have attended some of those concerts.

All of the above demonstrates why my book is called Searching for Perot: My Journey to Discover Texas’ Top Family.

If this doesn’t qualify them as Texas’ top family, I don’t know what would.
