On the 30th anniversary of the ‘92 race, Dallas Observer pokes fun at Ross Perot’s campaign song. Crazy by Patsy Cline.

It’s political legend. The Patsy Cline version of the song “Crazy” was sort of Ross Perot Sr.’s official campaign song in the 1992 presidential race. But he didn’t open rallies with it.

Still, in a fun piece, The Dallas Observer pokes fun at this in “5 Dumbest Uses of Popular Songs During Political Campaigns” by Danny Gallagher.

Perot was working on another campaign song, but never got to finish it. I know this because one of the composers, a friend of mine, played me the tune on his smart phone.

There’s also this song that I used in my play about Ross — PEROT! American Patriot — as the opening overture. Listen to: Where are you now when we need you Ross Perot? It’s not a campaign song, but it fits.

But as far as “Crazy” goes, Ross danced to it with Margot and each of his four daughters on stage at a pre-election rally. You can watch it here: https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4588685/user-clip-ross-perot-crazy-campaign-song.

I call it one of the greatest acts of self-deprecation in American presidential politics. Who else but Perot could have pulled this off?

Ross was brilliantly poking fun at the media for its constant criticism. It wasn’t only his campaign song. It was his last laugh.

What’s your interpretation?

Ross and Margot dance at a Nov. 2 pre-election campaign rally to the Patsy Cline classic, “Crazy.”
